Pre-concert talk by Artistic Director, Dennis Houser, at 2:00PM

Winners of the Fourth Annual Prescott Chorale Young Artists Competition will perform.

To round out our fifth year as the Prescott Chorale, the April 25 afternoon concert, Light and Life: This Side the Ground, will showcase two of most exciting choral composers of today. Dan Forrest came to Prescott last year at the invitation of Jacob Gilbert, Prescott United Methodist Church’s music director, to work with singers and conduct several of his pieces. His compositions span major works for chorus and orchestra choral repertoire that is more accessible for church and community choirs. The second featured composer, Eriks Eenvalds, is a native of Latvia and has created a huge body of work in his roughly 20 years of composing. He has won multiple awards and had his music heard on every continent.

Dennis Houser chose works by both composers for their musicality and the spirituality that underlies their beauty and enchanting sound. Dennis stated, “These works speak to me as an artistic director, AND as a listener who finds a very personal response to the spirit of the music.” The Chorale will perform Eenvalds’ Trinity Te Deum which is based on the ceremonial music for grand occasions in the Anglican tradition. The audience will delight to the flashing fanfares from brass and organ, by turns jubilant and hushed before a “magical” organ modulation to a contrasting center.

Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living, is one of his best known works and “forms a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow, as for the dead.” While using many of the forms and movements of a requiem, this piece for chorus and orchestra, has a decidedly contemporary sound and new interpretations of the traditional motifs. He has taken inspiration from images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope, views of the earth from the International Space Station, and the life force of cities teeming with the energy of humanity.

Requiem for the Living – Dan Forrest

Trinity Te Deum – Erik Esenvalds

Requiem for the Living is a transcendent prayer for peace and rest based on the liturgical Requiem and other texts. The Trinity Te Deum reimagines the Anglican tradition of ceremonial music for a grand occasion in the composer’s own terms.
